RBC Transfusions:
Purpose:
RBC transfusions are primarily used to increase the number of red blood cells in the body, thus improving the blood's ability to carry oxygen to tissues.
Conditions:
They are indicated in cases of anemia, where the body doesn't have enough red blood cells due to various reasons like blood loss, destruction of red blood cells by the immune system (IMHA), or decreased red blood cell production.
Examples:
RBC transfusions are used for acute blood loss from trauma, immune-mediated hemolytic anemia, and chronic illnesses like kidney disease or cancer that cause anemia.
Whole Blood Transfusions:
Purpose:
Whole blood contains all blood components, including RBCs, white blood cells, platelets, and clotting factors. It is used to address both anemia and blood volume depletion.
Conditions:
Whole blood transfusions are indicated when there's significant blood loss due to trauma or surgery, or when there is a need to replace both red blood cells and clotting factors.
Example:
In cases of severe hemorrhage from a traumatic injury, whole blood can be used to restore both oxygen-carrying capacity and blood volume.
